A Tale of Two Teams: How the Cubs - White Sox Rivalry Reflects Chicago
Chicago is a city divided. Just as geography fractures the city into different neighborhoods with passionate identities, baseball has split the loyalty of Chicago area fans for more than a century. For many people, the resulting rivalry reflects the differences between the city's North and South Sides.
This spring the students in Jon Marshall's Newswriting 301 class at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism looked at the Cubs - White Sox competition and what it means for Chicago. They produced videos, took photos and wrote stories that describe the teams' histories, the diehard fans who support them, the neighborhoods surrounding their ballparks, their economic impact and their promotion through mass media, merchandise and blogs.
